The 40-day rule
You must apply at least 40 calendar days before your current lawful stay expires. Not before you want the new permit to begin: before the existing one runs out. Applications filed inside that window are refused review, and the refusal is procedural rather than substantive, so the strength of your case is irrelevant to it. Where the deadline is missed but the card is still valid, the Agency may accept an application with a good reason. That is discretion, not a right, and it is not a plan.
What changed at renewal in 2026
Renewal used to be a lighter version of the original application. For anyone on a work or IT permit it is no longer, because since 1 March 2026 the Special Labour Permit sits underneath the residence permit and has to be valid too. That means two expiry dates to track instead of one, from two different agencies that do not coordinate with each other. If you have held a work permit since before March 2026 and have never obtained a labour permit, the renewal is the moment that gap becomes visible, so it is worth starting earlier than you would have done.

Property permits renew annually for as long as you own the property. Work permits renew while the underlying activity and evidence continue. After ten years of temporary residence, permanent residence removes the renewal cycle altogether: five years if you are on the investment permit.
A break in continuous lawful residence is exactly what the ten-year requirement is measuring, so a gap is expensive in a way that is invisible until you apply. This is the strongest argument for renewing early rather than at the deadline.
