A residence permit is no longer permission to work. On the work and IT routes, those are two applications.
On 1 March 2026 Georgia introduced the Special Labour Permit. Three things trigger it: employing non-Georgian nationals here, trading as an Individual Entrepreneur with Georgian clients, and applying for a work or IT residence permit. It comes from a different ministry, takes up to 30 days on its own, and on those two routes the residence permit is not granted without it.
Get the order wrong there and you are refused rather than delayed. Employers carry the other side of it: a company with unpermitted foreign staff is fined $765, and $765 again lands on the worker, with until 1 January 2027 to regularise people already on the books. That is not long for a process with a 30-day decision at the end of it.
Who needs a Special Labour Permit- Labour permit firstOn the work and IT routes, before the residence permit.
- $765 + $765On the employer, and separately on the worker.
- 1 January 2027Employers, to regularise existing foreign staff.
- Two exemptionsInvestment permit holders and permanent residents.
Six ways into Georgian residency
Which one applies is decided by your circumstances, not your preference. Most people reading this are on the work route, and if you are not, we would rather tell you at the consultation than after you have paid for the wrong application.
Work residence permit
The main route for freelancers, remote workers and employees. Since March 2026 it runs on top of a Special Labour Permit.
IT residence permit
A three-year permit for IT professionals earning $25,000+ a year, with two years of experience behind them. Longer than any other work route.
Residence permit by property
Buy qualifying Georgian property and get a renewable one-year residence permit. No job, no business, and no criminal record certificate on the published document list.
Investment residence permit
Five years at a time on a $300,000 investment, exempt from the labour permit, and the fastest route to permanent status.
Family reunification
Your spouse, children and, if you are a citizen or permanent resident, your parents can get permits through their relationship to you.
Study residence permit
For students enrolled at an accredited Georgian institution. Runs for the duration of study and can transition to a work permit afterwards.
Three stages, and the order matters

No costWe work out which route your circumstances actually support, whether the new labour permit applies to you, and how many days you have before the 40-day filing deadline bites. If you do not need us, we say so.
- 02
Work authorisation, if you need it
Up to 30 daysOn the work and IT routes the Special Labour Permit comes before the residence permit, from a different ministry, and has done since 1 March 2026. Applications that skip it are refused rather than delayed. On the property, investment, family and study routes it does not arise.

Documents, filed and followed
1–2 weeksApostilles, certified translations, income and address evidence. We go to the Public Service Hall with you and stay on the file until the card is in your hand.
The part nobody warns you about
A residence permit is not a one-off. It renews on a clock, and you must file at least 40 calendar days before your current stay expires or the Agency will not review it at all. Ten years of unbroken renewals is what unlocks permanent residence, and a single gap resets the count.
Special Labour Permit
Government authorisation for labour activity in Georgia. Required to employ foreign staff, to trade as an IE with Georgian clients, or to apply for a work or IT residence permit.
Renewal and extension
File 40 calendar days before expiry or the Agency will not review it. We track the date so you do not have to.
Permanent residence
Indefinite status after ten years of continuous temporary residence, or five on an investment permit. Ends the renewal cycle and the labour permit requirement with it.
Georgian citizenship
Ten years of residence, exams in Georgian language, history and law, and, for most applicants, giving up the passport you already hold.
Free consultation
Thirty minutes to establish which route fits, what it costs, and whether you have enough time left on your current stay.
Straight answers from someone who files these every week
Route and residency questions go to Levan directly, not to a sales team. He takes the free consultation himself.
Fixed fees, quoted upfront
Every price on this site is the price. No hourly creep, no "it depends" invoice at the end.
We watch the deadlines
You must file at least 40 calendar days before your stay expires or the Agency will not review it. We hold that date, and the labour permit date underneath it.
Current law, not last year’s
The property threshold moved to $150,000 and permanent residence takes ten years, not six. A lot of pages still say otherwise. Every figure here is dated and sourced.
English, start to finish
Georgian bureaucracy runs in Georgian. Every conversation you have with us runs in English.

Georgian residence permits, answered
Frequently asked
Through one of six routes: work, IT, property ownership, investment, family reunification or study. Which one applies depends on your circumstances rather than your preference. Since 1 March 2026, the work and IT routes additionally require a Special Labour Permit, obtained first from a separate ministry.
The government decision takes 10 to 30 days depending on the fee you pay, and 60 to 90 days on the IT route. Realistically, budget six to eight weeks end to end on a work route. The labour permit takes up to 30 days on its own, and an apostilled criminal record certificate from your home country usually takes longer than everything else combined.
Our fees run from $380 for a study permit to $1,070 for the complete self-employed package including a labour permit and Individual Entrepreneur registration. Government fees are separate: $115 for a 30-day decision, up to $230 for 10 days, plus $75 to $155 for the labour permit. Fees are quoted in USD and settled in Georgian lari.
$150,000, from 1 March 2026. It was $100,000 before that date, so treat any lower figure as out of date. The value has to be certified by an assessor accredited through Georgia’s Unified National Accreditation Body, so your purchase price alone is not enough.
Not to be present, and not to work remotely for clients or an employer abroad. Most nationalities get 365 visa-free days, resettable on exit, and an Individual Entrepreneur can be registered and run on that basis indefinitely. People take a residence permit to stop the border runs, to open banking that visa-free status limits, to support a tax residency position, and to start the ten-year count toward permanent residence. A Special Labour Permit is a separate question, and it turns on whether your clients are Georgian.
It is government authorisation for labour activity in Georgia, in force since 1 March 2026 and administered separately from the residence permit. It is required in three cases: a company employing non-Georgian nationals here, an Individual Entrepreneur whose clients are Georgian, and anyone applying for a work or IT residence permit. Outside those three it does not arise, so working remotely for foreign clients does not engage it. An employer with unpermitted foreign staff is fined $765, and $765 again lands on the worker.
At least 40 calendar days before your current lawful stay expires. The Agency refuses to review applications filed inside that window, and it does so routinely. This is the most common avoidable failure in Georgian immigration and it has nothing to do with the strength of your case.
Georgian permanent residence requires ten years of continuous temporary residence. Investment residence permit holders qualify after five years, and the spouse or minor child of a Georgian citizen qualifies immediately.
No, and conflating the two is expensive. Tax residency is a separate test, broadly 183 days of physical presence in a rolling 12-month period. A residence permit supports that position with documentation but does not create it, and plenty of people hold one without being tax resident.
Yes, through family reunification. What you can sponsor depends on your own status: a temporary resident can bring a spouse and minor children on showing accommodation and means, while Georgian citizens and permanent residents can also bring parents and adult children.
